January has a funny way of arriving quietly and then throwing all the weather at us at once. One day it’s crisp and bright, the next it’s rain-soaked and grey — but here at Harrogate Skills for Living, January has been anything but dull.
After a lovely festive break we came back to the day centre, our sessions focused on gently getting back into routines, trying new things, and embracing the season for what it is (layers, wellies, and hot food included).
With the darker afternoons and chilly mornings, our arts and crafts sessions have been the perfect way to slow down and warm up. From painting to pottery and seasonal crafts of experimenting with textures and colours, learners have been letting their creativity take the lead. There’s something very comforting about making things by hand while the rain taps on the windows outside. Check out our fantastic creations below and also on our social media pages.
Learners were keen to get back to our gym and fitness sessions. Whether it’s building confidence with equipment, improving mobility, or simply enjoying being active together, these sessions have been about feeling good.. A great way to shake off the winter sluggishness and boost those January moods.
Despite the unpredictable weather, we’ve still been getting out and about — sometimes dry, sometimes definitely not. The Wednesdat Wanderers group have wrapped up in waterproofs and enjoyed getting fresh air, spotting winter changes in nature, and proving that a bit of rain doesn’t have to stop us. Wet walks often lead to the best laughs (and the most appreciation for a warm drink afterwards). The Out and About group have enjoyed days out to the bowling alley, Knaresborough and numerous cafe stops to name but a few of their activities this new year,
Our cooking sessions have been especially popular this month, with a focus on hearty, comforting meals perfect for cold days. Chopping, stirring, tasting, and learning new skills has filled the kitchen with warmth — and some lovely smells too. January comfort food at its finest.
In between the frosty mornings and muddy paths, we’ve also made a welcome return to the Harrogate Skills for Living allotment. While it’s a quieter time of year, there’s still plenty to do — clearing beds, planning ahead, and getting ready for the growing months to come. It’s a reminder that even in winter, things are quietly preparing to grow.
January may be known for its grey skies, but at Harrogate Skills for Living it’s been full of creativity, movement, shared experiences, and lots of tasty cooking. Take a look at some of our January photos below.
