Today is Time to talk day 2020. (Thursday 6th February)
Time to talk is a campaign by time to change to change the way people think and act about mental health problems.
At Harrogate Skills for Living Centre we support such campaigns as they help with raising awareness of the important subject that is mental health. It is estimated that mental health problems among adults with a learning disabilities are quite common, approximately 40%. This is nearly double the rate of mental health problems in the general population but we also know that mental health problems can affect anyone on any day of the year!
We believe that it is very important to talk about mental health and Time to Change is a growing social movement working to change the way we all think and act about mental health problems. They have already reached millions of people and begun to improve attitudes and behaviour.
Despite progress made, we all know that many people still don’t consider mental health relevant to them. They don’t believe mental health problems are likely to affect them or people around them.
But the reality is that mental health can affect anyone. Statistically, 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year. They range from common problems, such as depression and anxiety, to rarer problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. No one should have to fear being treated differently because of a mental health problem.
Time to Talk Day exists to help encourage everyone to be more open about mental health – to talk, to listen, to change lives.
